What “NCS” means
Firms on the DEQ septage list carry identifiers like NCS-#####. That permit covers hauling and proper disposal of septage — not the same thing as a county on-site wastewater installer license.
Verification steps
- Ask the company for their full legal name and NCS number.
- Look them up on the current NC DEQ septage firm / facility list.
- Confirm status is Open (or equivalent active) and activity includes Hauler.
- Match the phone and address closely — OCR and list lag happen.
- If anything smells off, call DEQ DWM or your county EH before paying.
Who does what
County environmental health typically permits the septic system itself (permits to install/repair, inspections). DEQ permits the truck that hauls septage. You may need both conversations for different problems.
